Distinguished and Famous people from The Myall Coast

🐨 Jean Shaw

Jean Shaw became known locally as the Koala Lady through her work rescuing sick and injured animals around Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens. She was an inaugural member of the Myall Koala and Environment Group, formed in 1989 after a university research project brought residents together to help track koalas. The volunteers continued the work through monitoring, rescue and advocacy. Shaw’s contribution joined hands-on care with a community effort to understand what was happening to the local population. The Jean Shaw Koala Reserve at Hawks Nest preserves her name within the landscape that concerned her.

🏖️ John Howard

John Howard repeatedly holidayed with his family at Hawks Nest. In a July 1997 radio interview, while prime minister, he said his family had visited for seventeen consecutive years. It also supplies a quieter chapter in the life of a national political figure: the Myall Coast was a familiar place for time away from Canberra.
